Priest in Korydallos Puts Shutters on Church After Burglary

Published February 13, 2026, 12:36

A priest in Korydallos, following a burglary at his church last year, decided to install protective shutters on the sacred temple. The perpetrators managed to enter the church despite the alarm, cutting the door and protective iron bars, and stole gold jewelry and vows from the icon of the Virgin Mary. The installation of the shutters was deemed the only solution to prevent similar incidents, as other churches in the area had also been victims of theft. The shutters are closed at night and opened in the morning, so as not to affect the appearance of the church during the day. The priest stated that the burglars used a grinder to violate the church's protective measures and that vows had been removed from the icon of the Virgin Mary. He also informed that a 30-year-old man who stole vows and gold jewelry from temples in the area was arrested last May, however, there was no confirmation as to whether it was the same perpetrator who committed the burglary at his church. This practice is a response to increased crime against religious sites and highlights the need to enhance their safety and protection.
