Significant Easter Lamb Price Hike Expected in Cyprus

A significant increase in lamb prices is expected for Easter in Cyprus, with estimates reaching up to €20 per kilogram, representing an increase of up to 50%. This rise is attributed to the spread of foot-and-mouth disease in Cyprus and Lesvos, from where imports are made. The Butchers' Association is trying to find alternative supply sources through Greece (Bulgaria and Romania), but faces difficulties due to limited supply and increased demand. The President of the Association, Kostas Livadiotis, emphasized the great difficulties in supply and slaughter, while noting that Cypriot consumers remain loyal to the traditional consumption of lamb at Easter, despite the price increases. There is already movement in the market, with consumers stocking up on meat earlier to avoid higher prices.
