Cyprus to Prioritize EU Interests and Adult Protection during Presidency

The Minister of Justice and Public Order, Kostas Fytiris, presented the priorities of the Cypriot Presidency in the Council of the EU to the European Parliament's Legal Affairs Committee (JURI) for the first half of 2026. The Presidency will focus on protecting citizens, combating discrimination, strengthening equality and social rights, and defending the interests of the Union and enhancing its competitiveness. Particular emphasis will be placed on the 'package for the protection of adults', aiming for the swift completion of negotiations on the relevant Regulation, which seeks to protect vulnerable adults in cross-border situations. Furthermore, mutual recognition of parenthood will be promoted, taking into account previous discussions and opinions. The Cypriot Presidency will strive to bridge disagreements on critical issues such as jurisdiction and applicable law, in order to achieve consensus within the Council.
