Death and Hospitalizations Linked to GBL Substance in Larnaca

A 78-year-old man was found dead at his home in Larnaca, while four people were hospitalized with symptoms of poisoning. The cause appears to be the consumption of water from a cooler containing the substance GBL (gamma-Butyrolactone), which is also used as a drug substitute. GBL converts to GHB in the body, a potent depressant with effects similar to drugs and alcohol. Authorities are investigating how the substance ended up in the cooler and whether it is related to the elderly man's death. The son of the deceased, 44, was previously arrested for possession of drugs (methamphetamine, MDMA, cannabis) and is expected to be questioned for possible involvement. The mother of the deceased was the first to be taken to hospital and is expected to testify. The case began when the 73-year-old wife of the deceased consumed water from the cooler and felt unwell. Initial examinations showed no external injuries to the deceased. Blood tests on the hospitalized individuals and scientific examinations of the 78-year-old's body are expected to shed light on the case. The Drug Enforcement Agency is involved in the case from the beginning, due to the nature of the substance found. The investigation is ongoing and authorities are trying to determine whether this is an isolated incident or a wider problem of drug use in the area.
