Digital Banking "Killed" Physical Branches

Cyprus recorded the highest rate of bank branch closures in the Eurozone, with a decrease from 137.3 branches in 2002 to 19.4 in 2024. This dramatic decrease is due to the shift towards digital banking and the need for cost savings. A study by the Central Bank, published in March 2026, also points to a decline in employment in the banking sector and increased market concentration. The strengthening of digital banks is expected to intensify competition, potentially narrowing spreads and improving access to finance.
