Technology Reshaping Urban Planning According to International Organizations

Technology is playing an increasingly important role in urban planning as the global population concentrates in cities. OECD estimates predict that by 2050, over 70% of the world's population will live in urban areas, requiring significant investment in infrastructure, energy, transportation, and public services. McKinsey estimates that investments in urban infrastructure need to exceed $3.7 trillion annually by 2035 to meet these needs. The concept of the "smart city" is evolving from a simple technological slogan into a substantial urban development strategy, with cities like Singapore, Barcelona, Helsinki, and Amsterdam investing in digital infrastructure and new governance models. Indices such as the IMD Smart City Index and OECD analyses confirm the effort to improve the quality of life and efficiency of urban systems through technology. Modern urban planning is not limited to digital services but involves redesigning infrastructure. Transportation networks, energy systems, water networks, and public services integrate technologies to become more efficient and resilient. This process requires a combination of technical expertise, data, and technology. International organizations such as UN-Habitat and the Global Smart Cities Alliance predict that the integration of digital technologies will be crucial for urban development in the coming decades. In Europe, the European Commission promotes the digital and energy upgrade of cities through initiatives such as "100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities" and funding instruments such as Horizon Europe and InvestEU.
