Rodriguez Calls for Full Lifting of US Sanctions on Venezuela

Venezuela's interim leader, Delcy Rodriguez, has called on US President Donald Trump to fully lift the sanctions imposed on her country, as the US and Venezuela begin to restore diplomatic relations. US sanctions, imposed since 2014, have devastated the Venezuelan economy, with inflation soaring to 475% in 2025. The change in bilateral relations came after the deportation of Nicolas Maduro to the US, where he is accused of drug trafficking. The US has relaxed the oil embargo and issued licenses for companies to operate in the country. On Friday, the US approved the import of Venezuelan fertilizers, in a move linked to rising prices due to the war in Iran. Ms. Rodriguez emphasized that the sanctions harm not only Venezuela but all of Latin America. Talks with Colombia aim to normalize relations, with Venezuela pushing Colombian ELN rebels back across the border, responding to US pressure. Venezuela has the largest oil reserves in the world, but its production has declined due to chronic underinvestment. A full lifting of sanctions could help revive the economy and increase oil production.
