AKEL and RPP Leaders Confirm Commitment to Cyprus Solution

Sila Usar Incirli, the new President of the Republican Turkish Party (RTP), visited AKEL headquarters in Nicosia and met with General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to joint action to break the deadlock in the Cyprus issue and achieve a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality. The meeting focused on finding ways to restart negotiations, from where they were interrupted in Crans Montana, while preserving convergences and utilizing the Guterres framework. Stefanou expressed concern about the lack of results from recent meetings, while Incirli emphasized the risk of perpetuating the division, but also the strong will of Turkish Cypriots for a solution, as demonstrated by the election of Tufan Erhurman. The two parties agreed to strengthen confidence-building measures and further cooperate through joint working groups. They highlighted the importance of confidence-building measures but stressed that these do not replace a solution to the Cyprus problem. Incirli and Stefanou referred to the need to support the efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, Maria Angela Holguin, and Erhurman’s meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. The two leaders also mentioned a shared acquaintance and years of friendship between them, starting with their participation in EDON events in 1993.
