Cyprus Ranks Third in EU for Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction

Cyprus ranked third among European Union member states in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the third quarter of 2023, with a decrease of 5.2% compared to the second quarter, according to data released by Eurostat. At the EU level, emissions increased by 1.1% compared to the second quarter, reaching 828 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent, while Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increased by 0.4%. The sectors with the largest increases in emissions were households and manufacturing, while the only decrease was recorded in the energy sector. Compared to the third quarter of 2022, emissions remained stable, while the EU's GDP increased by 1.6%. Cyprus ranked third after Estonia (-17.4%) and Slovenia (-5.7%). Cyprus was one of ten countries that reduced emissions despite an increase or stability in GDP. Overall, in the third quarter of 2023, emissions decreased in 10 EU countries and increased in 17. This indicates a heterogeneous picture in the effort to reduce emissions across Europe, with Cyprus standing out for its success in this area. Cyprus' performance highlights the importance of policies and measures implemented to address climate change.
