Cyprus Ranks Third in EU for Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction

Cyprus ranked third among European Union member states in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the third quarter of 2023, with a decrease of 5.2% compared to the second quarter. According to Eurostat data, total greenhouse gas emissions in the EU increased by 1.1% during the same quarter, despite a 0.4% increase in Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The largest increases in emissions were recorded in the household and manufacturing sectors, while the electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply sector saw a decrease. Compared to the third quarter of 2022, emissions remained stable, while GDP increased by 1.6%. Overall, 10 EU countries reduced their emissions in the third quarter of 2023, while 17 countries saw an increase. Cyprus follows Estonia (-17.4%) and Slovenia (-5.7%) in the list of countries with the largest reductions. Most of the countries that reduced their emissions also experienced an increase or stability in their GDP. These results indicate that Cyprus is making significant progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, despite economic growth, demonstrating the effectiveness of policies implemented to address climate change.
