Cyprus to Participate in Trump's Peace Council

The Republic of Cyprus will participate as an observer in Trump's Peace Council meeting in Washington on February 19, 2026. This participation is part of Cyprus's active regional policy, which has already proposed specific initiatives for the Gaza crisis. Cyprus, as an EU member and neighboring country, seeks to contribute to the stabilization and pacification of the region. The meeting will discuss the next steps for implementing Trump's Plan, as adopted by the UN Security Council with Resolution 2803. Cyprus had already submitted a proposal for the implementation of the Peace Plan at the Sharm el-Sheikh Summit. However, this development raises concerns about the potential weakening of the role of the UN. Professor of International Law Aris Constantinis points out that the Peace Council, as stipulated in Resolution 2803, will have international legal personality and will undertake the reconstruction of Gaza. Mr. Constantinis expresses fears that this Council will acquire a broader role in international peace and security, with selected members and a decisive role for the American President, which could lead to conflicts of jurisdiction with the UN and endanger the obligations of member states under the UN Charter.
