Cyprus Reaffirms Commitment to Gender Equality in Science

Cyprus has reiterated its commitment to promoting gender equality in science, technology, and innovation, considering it fundamental for socio-economic development. Maria Michael, Cyprus's Permanent Representative to the UN, expressed this commitment during the 11th Assembly of the Royal Academy of Science International Trust. Cyprus has incorporated gender equality into its national strategy for the period 2024-2026, aiming to move beyond rhetoric and achieve measurable results for all. The strategy focuses on creating inclusive educational systems and innovation frameworks, while also recognizing the importance of funding to enhance women's participation. Specific scholarship programs have been established for women over 30 to facilitate their retraining and integration into the fields of technology and innovation. Cyprus emphasizes that gender equality is not merely a peripheral issue but a basic prerequisite for sustainable development. Investing in a workforce that includes both women and men contributes to the development of ethical and socially responsible scientific solutions. Furthermore, Cyprus supports the view that greater participation of women and girls in science leads to better science. The country declares its readiness to support the implementation of the Assembly's outcome declaration and to create a future where every girl has the opportunity to pursue her scientific dreams and contribute to society.
