Government Proceeds Despite Protests

The government is proceeding with the construction of a desalination plant in the Mazotos area, despite strong opposition from the local community. The Council of Ministers rejected the application of the Community Council for the use of the specific state plot for tree planting, as the construction of the water production unit is planned. The project, costing €64 million, will have a production capacity of up to 40,000 cubic meters of water per day and is expected to be completed by 2032. The decision also includes expropriations of access roads and the installation of an electrical substation. The government justifies its decision with the low water levels in the dams, choosing to confront local resistance in order to avoid cuts in water supply. The construction of the plant will transform the area into a water production industrial hub. The residents of Mazotos have already begun mobilizations and are expected to continue to react to the project, which has a budget of €64 million and a contract duration of 7 years. It remains to be seen how determined they are to clash with the government.
