Climate Change Could Lead to 500,000 Deaths by 2050

The rise in global temperature, a result of climate change, is affecting people's health by reducing their physical activity and increasing the risk of serious illness. A new study found that each additional month with an average temperature above 27.8°C is associated with a 1.5% increase in physical inactivity worldwide, while the increase is even greater in low- and middle-income countries. Lack of physical activity increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, certain types of cancer, and mental health disorders. The study predicts that further increases in inactivity could lead to approximately 500,000 additional premature deaths each year by 2050, as well as significant economic losses. The largest increases are expected in hot regions such as Central America, the Caribbean, and Southeast Asia. The study highlights that climate change exacerbates inequalities, as the areas most affected are often those with the fewest resources to adapt. Researchers emphasize that addressing climate change and promoting physical activity are essential for improving public health and reducing the impacts of the climate crisis.
