Europe's LNG Dilemma: Trading One Dependency for Another?

Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Europe replaced its dependence on Russian natural gas with a new reliance on US liquefied natural gas (LNG). While increased LNG imports from the US helped de-escalate prices, they are raising concerns about potential political pressure from the United States. Eurasia Group points out that Europe “replaced one huge dependency with another.” The US government has encouraged this dependence, pushing Europe to increase LNG imports. The worry is that Donald Trump, if re-elected, could leverage the US's strong position in the energy market as leverage in disputes with Europe. The US share of EU LNG imports is expected to reach one-quarter by 2025, fueling fears of potential exploitation.
