Legal Committee Discusses Modernization of Adoption Framework

The Parliamentary Legal Committee discussed a bill to modernize the adoption framework, which has been described as overdue but necessary to ensure the best interests of the child. DISY MP Fotini Tsiridou emphasized the need to comply with European legislation and prohibit direct agreements between a mother and a couple. KYSOA has expressed the view that people with disabilities who are capable should have the right to adopt, subject to strict conditions. ELAM MP Sotiris Ioannou, on the other hand, expressed the opinion that every child should grow up with a mother and a father, while predicting gaps in the bill regarding adoption by same-sex couples. He also expressed opposition to the automatic recognition of foreign adoption decrees.
