Strengthening Europe's Plant-Based Future and Opportunities for Cyprus

An event titled “Strengthening Europe's Plant-Based Future: Experiences from Denmark and Perspectives for Cyprus and the EU” will be held at the Leventis Municipal Gallery on February 20, 2026, under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment. The event is co-organized by the NGO Animal Advocacy & Food Transition, the Cyprus University of Technology and the Danish Plant-Based Diplomacy Initiative. It aims to discuss food systems, sustainability, health and resilience. The event will begin with speeches by the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Maria Panagiotou, and the Danish Minister for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, Jacob Jensen. This will be followed by a discussion with representatives from the public administration, the academic community, the investment and industrial sector, civil society and the agri-food sector. Olga Kikou will present the roadmap for an EU Action Plan for Plant-Based Foods. The timing of the event is strategic, as Denmark's presidency of the EU has contributed to raising plant-based foods and protein diversification on the European agenda. With Cyprus taking on a more important role in Europe, the event presents an opportunity for Cyprus to lead in shaping a more resilient and sustainable food system. Cyprus faces challenges such as fires, droughts, water scarcity and worrying dietary trends, making the discussion about plant-based products more relevant than ever. Cyprus’s statements in the EU emphasize the country's dependence on imports and the need for alternative proteins, positioning it as an important player in the European discussion.
