EU Pledges Support for Cyprus on British Bases Issue

The Republic of Cyprus has secured the support of the European Union for discussions with the United Kingdom regarding the status of the British Bases, when conditions allow after the crisis in the Middle East. This support was added to the conclusions of the European Council at the last moment and is considered a strengthening of Cyprus's diplomatic position. The EU states its readiness to provide assistance to Cyprus “if and as needed” in the dialogue with London. This reference follows the EU's already expressed support for member states affected by instability in the region, with particular reference to Cyprus. In addition, the conclusions specifically mention Cyprus's role in the humanitarian aspect of the Gaza crisis, emphasizing the importance of the Maritime Corridor for aid delivery. The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stressed that “Cyprus's security is the security of the European Union” and praised President Christodoulides’ handling of the situation. The EU seeks to strengthen cooperation with countries in the region and believes that joint action is the strongest tool for crisis management. The reference to the British Bases is particularly important as it is linked to broader geopolitical balances. Cyprus is expected to leverage EU support at the political and diplomatic levels.
