EU to Honor Giannis Antetokounmpo with the European Order of Merit – Among the First 20 Recipients

Giannis Antetokounmpo will be honored by the European Union with the European Order of Merit, the new European award of honor, for his contribution to promoting European values. European Parliament President Roberta Metsola announced the names of the first recipients, including the Greek basketball player. The list of the first awardees also includes former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, former Polish President Lech Wałęsa and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The selection of the awardees was made by a committee consisting of representatives of European institutions. In addition to Giannis Antetokounmpo, chef José Andrés, lawyer Mark Gidara, scientist Sandra Leinitz, activist Oleksandra Matviychuk, former European Commissioner Viviane Reding and the members of the band U2, Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. were also recognized as Honorary Members of the European Order of Merit. The European Order of Merit is awarded to individuals who have made a significant contribution to the promotion and defense of European values, such as democracy, freedom, respect for human rights and social justice.
