Drouseia Hosts First PIKNIK: A Counter-Conference Dedicated to Cultivating Ecological Imagination and Experimental Collaborations

PIKNIK is a new initiative by the Xarkis NGO, hosting artists from Cyprus and abroad, culminating in a two-day picnic in Drouseia (Paphos) on February 27-28. The idea behind PIKNIK is to challenge the typical structures of conferences as spaces for knowledge exchange, proposing an informal and friendly environment for discussions about the ecological and climate crisis. PIKNIK aims to bridge experiences and knowledge from different fields, such as art, agriculture, ecology, and crafts, promoting intergenerational, interdisciplinary, and thematic exchange. The picnic format was chosen due to the light, social, and inspiring atmosphere it creates, encouraging friendship, collaboration, and mutual learning. During the two days, the public will have the opportunity to hear from artists, farmers, activists, and professionals, participate in workshops, walks, and collective meals, and explore Drouseia. Participants will be able to learn about traditional seeds, experiment with gardening methods, and enjoy meals that combine ecology, cooking, and contemporary art. PIKNIK seeks to create a space where curiosity, humor, creativity, and hope are at the center of discussions about the climate crisis, making these discussions more accessible to everyone, regardless of their specialized knowledge.
