Divided Left Wins Second Round of French Municipal Elections

The French municipal elections showed the triumph of left-wing candidates in the largest cities, such as Paris, Marseille, and Lyon. However, the left appeared divided, as in many municipalities where left-wing parties ran united, the results were not as expected. In Paris and Marseille, the Socialists prevailed who did not cooperate with La France Insoumise (France Unbowed), while in Lyon, the Green and La France Insoumise coalition won. The Republican Party expressed satisfaction with its victories in several municipalities, while Marine Le Pen's National Rally failed to prevail in cities where polls showed it as the favorite. Macron-aligned combinations achieved successes in some cities, such as Le Havre. La France Insoumise expressed satisfaction with its victories in Roubaix and Tampon, as well as its increased representation on municipal councils. Abstention in the elections was high, reaching 40%. Despite the abstention, all parties expressed satisfaction with the results, as they managed to win in various areas. The Socialist Party emphasized its victories in large cities, while the Republican Party highlighted its strong presence in municipalities.
