The Creation of the First Biosphere Reserve in Cyprus at the Center of the First Meeting of the Study Group of Convention 15/2025

The Office of the Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare organized an event to present the project for the candidacy of the Valleys of the Xeris and Diarizos Rivers as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The area includes 32 communities and four abandoned settlements, with significant cultural, historical, ecological and human resources. Inclusion in UNESCO is expected to contribute to strengthening local development, improving quality of life and promoting Cyprus internationally. The President of the Republic and the Government actively support the effort, recognizing its importance for the countryside. The success of the project requires the participation and support of local communities. The study group ETAM A.E. undertook the preparation of the candidacy file.
