Outdated Views Shown in MEP's Statement About People with Intellectual Disabilities, Says Commissioner

The Cypriot Paralympic Committee will submit a complaint to the European Parliament against MEP Fydias Panagiotou, following his use of the word “pellos” to describe people with intellectual disabilities during a podcast. The President of the Committee, Andreas Georgiou, stated that Mr. Panagiotou's behavior offends the Paralympic movement and that ignorance is not an excuse. The Commissioner for Administration and Protection of Human Rights, Maria Stylianou Lottides, described the MEP's statement as an expression of outdated views and emphasized that the road to equality and inclusion is still long. The Deputy Government Spokesperson, Yannis Antoniou, described Mr. Panagiotou's remarks as disturbing and condemnable, expressing his support for the members of the Paralympic team.
