Annita Demetriou Calls for Resignation of Agriculture Minister – “Taking Responsibility is Not an Option, It’s an Obligation”

The President of the Democratic Rally (DISY), Annita Demetriou, today called for the resignation of the Minister of Agriculture due to the crisis caused by foot-and-mouth disease in Cyprus. Ms. Demetriou described the situation as “dramatic and out of control,” highlighting the lack of coordination and conflicting statements from the government and the Ministry of Agriculture. The President of DISY accused the Minister of failing to manage the crisis, citing specific examples of contradictory decisions regarding the culling of animals. She stressed that taking responsibility is an obligation, not an option, and that resignation is the only logical solution. DISY had warned of the possibility of the spread of foot-and-mouth disease as early as December and January, proposing specific prevention measures, which were not implemented. Ms. Demetriou accused the government of delay and a lack of effective information to livestock farmers. Additionally, the President of DISY announced that the party will promote interventions in the European Union to find solutions and provide support to affected livestock farmers.
