Livadia Municipality Calls for Immediate Support for Livestock Farmers Amid Foot-and-Mouth Disease Outbreak

The Deputy Mayor of Livadia, Marios Armenis, is calling for immediate support for livestock farmers affected by the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, as they are losing their livestock. He stressed the need for immediate government intervention, as farmers will also suffer a loss of future income. The Mayor of Larnaca, Andreas Vyras, and the Deputy Mayor of Voroklini, Neofytos Fakontis, agree that information about the situation should come from competent state services. The Municipality of Livadia has already offered supportive means, such as equipment for blocking the area, sprayers, lighting and water for spraying. In addition, it has compiled a list of people who have been psychologically affected and is in contact with Mental Health Services to provide them with psychological support. Regarding the management of the disease, vaccinations have begun on cattle farms and the expansion of vaccination to a 3-kilometer radius around the surveillance zone is planned. The virus serotype is the same as the one detected in the occupied territories. At the same time, cheesemakers are expressing concern, but believe the situation is manageable for halloumi production. The government is being called upon to announce immediate economic support measures for farmers, in order to avoid long-term economic uncertainty.
