Europe's Gas Prices Surge as US Cold Snap Disrupts LNG Exports

Natural gas prices in Europe have surged to a ten-month high due to the cold snap in the United States, which is limiting LNG exports. Benchmark prices in the Netherlands rose by 2.55 euros, reaching 42.75 euros per megawatt-hour (MWh), while in Britain, front-month futures increased by 6.3 pence, settling at 109 pence per thermal unit. The severe weather in the United States has impacted natural gas production and the flow to liquefaction facilities, reducing supply to LNG units, particularly Sabine Pass and Corpus Christi. This exacerbates concerns about storage levels in the European Union, given the importance of US LNG exports. In the United States, natural gas prices reached $6.29 per million British thermal units, the highest level since December 2022.
