CIAB: Architectural Competition is the Only Way Forward for New Student Residences

The CIAB firmly believes that an architectural competition is the only viable solution for the second phase of the University of Cyprus' student residences. The Chamber emphasizes that for projects of public interest, the quality of the study is paramount, and a competition ensures transparency, reliability, and the selection of the best solution. Furthermore, the architectural competition serves as a public policy tool, allowing for the comparative evaluation of proposals based on criteria such as functionality, sustainability, and public benefit. The CIAB argues that the competition process can be organized without affecting the project's schedule or budget, while simultaneously reducing the risk of future errors and increased costs. This position aligns with the European framework for architectural quality, where the built environment is considered a public good. The Chamber has sent a letter to the Minister of Finance, Makis Keravnos, urging him to support the selection of an architectural competition and to announce the competition for the student residences immediately, with clear quality and evaluation criteria. Finally, the CIAB stresses that, given the completion of the feasibility study by the University of Cyprus, no further delays should occur that would harm the public interest and the needs served by the project. The Chamber states its willingness to provide technical assistance in shaping the terms and criteria of the competition.
