Call to Freeze Rent Increases for Artists in Turkish Cypriot Properties

The Parliamentary Committee on Refugees decided to request a freeze on rent increases for artists and craftsmen operating in Turkish Cypriot properties at the "Mediterranean" Artists' Park in Larnaca, until the issue is reviewed. The decision was made after a discussion in the presence of Deputy Minister of Culture Vasiliki Kassianidou. The need to find a solution that supports the artists' stay in the area was emphasized. During the discussion, the unique cultural and tourist character of the area was highlighted, hosting displaced artists. Despite an informal agreement for low rents, verbal reports of increases began to emerge, even up to 80%, while now a 60% increase is foreseen for commercial leases. The members of the Committee stressed the importance of supporting the artists and avoiding unequal treatment. It was proposed to take into account the position of the Municipality of Larnaca, the Larnaca Tourism Development and Promotion Company (ETAP), the Deputy Ministry of Culture and the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, who wish to keep the area alive. The treatment of the refugee community should be based on recognizing their losses and their efforts to rebuild.
