Legal Committee Discusses Gender Equality Legislation

The Parliamentary Legal Committee discussed a bill proposed by the President of the House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou, regarding the integration of the gender dimension into the actions of the three branches of government (legislative, executive, and judicial) and the wider public sector. The Commissioner for Gender Equality, Jozi Christodoulou, explained that the bill aims to eliminate discrimination and adapt policies and actions to the different needs of women and men. The discussion included examples of good practices, such as yellow parking spaces for pregnant women and adequate public lighting to increase women's employment. Fotini Tsiridou (DISY) supported the need for full gender equality, while Sotiris Ioannou (ELAM) expressed doubts about the practical application of the bill and questioned the concept of gender as a social construct, arguing that it is biological. Mr. Ioannou requested clarification regarding the "feminist legal thought" mentioned in the explanatory report of the bill. The Commissioner for Gender Equality thanked women's organizations and the Legal Service for their contribution to the design of the bill.
