EU Urges Acceleration of Decisions for Greece-Cyprus Electricity Interconnector

The European Commission is pushing for the acceleration of decisions and procedures related to the Greece-Cyprus electricity interconnector project, known as the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI). The project, which has faced delays, is considered strategically important for the energy integration of the Eastern Mediterranean with the European electricity market and for ending Cyprus's energy isolation. The GSI involves the construction of a high-voltage submarine cable connecting Crete with Cyprus and, in a later phase, with Israel. Despite its importance, the project has faced challenges such as technical issues, economic uncertainties, and geopolitical tensions. The Commission emphasizes that the timely advancement of the project is crucial for the European energy strategy and the diversification of energy sources, urging Greece and Cyprus to quickly make the necessary decisions.
