Trump and Zelensky Discuss Ukraine: What Was Said During Their 30-Minute Call

Donald Trump told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that he wants to achieve an end to the war with Russia as soon as possible, according to a Ukrainian official and two other sources familiar with the phone conversation, as reported by Axios. Trump reportedly aims for a peace agreement by the summer, despite ongoing disagreements between Kyiv and Moscow, particularly regarding the control of territories in eastern Ukraine. The 30-minute phone call was the first between Trump and Zelensky since their meeting in Davos in late January and took place a day after the fourth anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and a day before Trump's envoys, Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, were to meet with Zelensky's negotiating team in Geneva. Zelensky stated that they discussed issues to be considered in the peace talks in Geneva and the trilateral negotiations in March, expressing hope that this would lead to leader-level talks. He emphasized that Trump supports this course of action and that only in this way can complex issues be resolved and the war ended. In a message marking the fourth anniversary of the Russian invasion, Zelensky assured that Putin has not achieved his goals and that the Ukrainian people have not lost their morale. He also welcomed European leaders to Kyiv, including Ursula von der Leyen and António Costa. Zelensky invited Trump to visit Ukraine, believing that such a visit would allow him to better understand the gravity of the situation and appreciate the sacrifices of the Ukrainian people.
