European Commission Under Investigation by EPPO: Concerns Over €900M Property Sale

The European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) is investigating the sale of 23 European Commission buildings to the Belgian State in 2024, involving Johannes Hahn. Offices of the Commission in Brussels were searched, examining potential irregularities in the sale process. The investigation focuses on Johannes Hahn's term as European Commissioner for Budget, as he was responsible for managing the EU budget. The sale of the buildings took place during a period following the COVID-19 pandemic, when there was an increase in remote work and a reduced need for large offices. The European Commission states that the sale followed established procedures and protocols and is confident that it was carried out in a compatible manner. The EPPO announced that it is gathering evidence as part of the ongoing investigation. The agreement to sell the buildings was made with the Belgian State, with the aim of upgrading the European Quarter of Brussels and using the buildings for housing, businesses, or commercial spaces. The total amount of the sale was estimated at €900 million.
