Commissioner Svitanova: Mediterranean Pact More Critical Than Ever

The European Commissioner for the Mediterranean highlighted the critical importance of the Mediterranean Pact in light of escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly following developments with Iran and the risk to navigation safety in the Strait of Hormuz. She stressed the need for de-escalation, dialogue, and diplomacy in the region. The Pact is gaining importance as it seeks to connect people in the region and create collaborations not only with Mediterranean countries but also with Gulf countries, which face increased risk. The Commissioner referred to strategic cooperation agreements with Gulf countries and her personal contact with regional ministers. The Pact includes an action plan with specific projects, such as the Renewable Energy Projects (TMED), the establishment of a Mediterranean University, and the creation of a fire station in Cyprus. The action plan will be discussed and approved at the summit in Cyprus in April. Additionally, the Commissioner expressed concern about the situation in Lebanon, which has deteriorated significantly, with more than 110,000 people crossing the border into Syria. She emphasized the need for a cessation of Israeli raids and Hezbollah activities. Regarding the safety of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, she pointed out that 1/5 of global oil trade passes through it, endangering the global economy.
