Children's Rights Commissioner Highlights Flaws in Refugee Law

The Children's Rights Commissioner, Elena Pericleous, submitted a memorandum to the Parliamentary Committee on Interior regarding the “Refugee Law of 2026” bill, highlighting significant shortcomings that affect the protection of children's rights. She acknowledges the positive efforts of the Deputy Ministry of Migration and International Protection, but emphasizes that the bill does not ensure a fully child-centered asylum system. Key deficiencies include the lack of independent representation for unaccompanied minors, the maintenance of a dual role of the authority as guardian and representative, and the possibility of detaining children, which is considered a setback. Additionally, she points out the lack of clarity regarding the assessment of the best interests of the child and the absence of a comprehensive regulatory framework for reception centers.
