EU Launches Formal Investigation into Elon Musk's Grok over Illegal Content

The European Commission has launched a formal investigation into Grok, the artificial intelligence chatbot of Elon Musk's platform X (formerly Twitter), regarding the spread of illegal content, specifically sexually explicit material involving minors. The investigation concerns potential violations of the EU's Digital Services Act (DSA), which requires online platforms to limit risks and protect fundamental rights. The investigation was initiated following reports of the mass production and distribution of sexually explicit content with minors through Grok. The European Commission has already imposed a fine of 120 million euros on X for previous violations of the DSA. If the investigation concludes that X has violated EU rules, the company could face a fine of up to 6% of its global annual turnover. The European Commission has already condemned Grok's operation as illegal and appalling. Elon Musk reacted to the criticism with a post on X, while the platform has been instructed to retain all relevant documents and data until the end of 2026. This investigation highlights the growing concern for online safety and the protection of users, especially regarding illegal and harmful content generated by artificial intelligence systems.
