Attack on Greek-Owned Tanker: Ownership Details and Possible Scenarios

One of the two tankers attacked in the Persian Gulf belongs to a Greek company owned by the Michail family, specifically Benetech. The other vessel, the Safesea Vishnu, is owned by an American company. One person died in the attack, and 38 crew members were rescued. Benetech manages a total of six tankers, while Vasilis Michail is married to the daughter of the owner of Jumbo, and his father, Michail Michail, was a partner of Lucas Hatzioannou. Videos circulating show the ships on fire, with a possible oil leak. The crew of the Greek-owned tanker, consisting of 22 Georgian nationals, are in good health. The fire was brought under control with the assistance of Iraqi firefighters. According to Iraqi sources, the ships were attacked while in a loading zone within Iraqi territorial waters. The Zefyros was preparing to dock to load naphtha. After the attack, the ports in the area suspended operations. Iran has claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that a submersible drone “blew up” the two tankers. Security sources report that an Iranian vessel rigged with explosives is believed to be responsible for the attack, while an investigation into the incident is underway.
