Saint Timothy the Apostle Celebrated Today

Today, January 22nd, the Church honors Saint Timothy the Apostle. According to the Acts of the Apostles and the letters of Paul, Timothy was the beloved disciple and close associate of the Apostle Paul. He was born in Lystra, Lycaonia, to a Greek father and a Jewish mother, Eunice, and was raised by his grandmother, Lois, with education and guidance. Timothy accompanied Paul on his apostolic journeys, actively participating in the spread of the Gospel. After Paul's martyrdom, he continued his missionary work in Ephesus. During a pagan festival for Artemis of Ephesus, Timothy suffered a brutal beating and martyrdom at the hands of an enraged mob due to his criticism of the orgies taking place. His relics were transferred to Constantinople in 356 AD under Constantius and placed in the Church of the Holy Apostles. The Apolytikion of Saint Timothy praises his virtue and faith.
