Orthodox Church Celebrates Saint Nikephoros and Other Saints

Today, March 13th, the Orthodox Church commemorates the Translation of the Holy Relics of Saint Nikephoros the Confessor, Patriarch of Constantinople, who was renowned for his defense of sacred icons during the period of Iconoclasm. Saint Nikephoros faced persecution and exile, remaining steadfast in his Orthodox faith. The Church honors the recovery of his relics as a significant event. In addition to Saint Nikephoros, Saints Aphricanus, Puplius, and Terentius are also honored, having martyred for their faith in Christ. Also commemorated is Saint Puplius, Bishop of Athens, one of the first shepherds of the Church of Athens, as well as Saint Leander of Spain, who contributed to the spread of Christianity in the Iberian Peninsula. Saint Marius, Bishop of Sebaste, and Saint Hypomone (Patience) are also honored on this day. Saint Hypomone is a symbol of humble patience and trust in God. The memory of these saints serves as a source of inspiration and strengthening of faith for the faithful. Today is the 3rd Week of Lent, and the Akathist Hymn to the Theotokos is chanted in churches, creating a reverent atmosphere in anticipation of Easter. Those named Leander and Hypomone celebrate their name day today.
