Meager Compensation – Law Referral Leaves Refugees Marginalized

Refugees are receiving a paltry €2 per month in compensation for the loss of their property in the occupied territories, following a referral of the relevant law by the President. Nikos Kettis, chairman of the parliamentary refugee committee, explained that this amount is based on a 0.04 cent fee for loss of use of property, paid by those selling property in the occupied areas. The total amount collected amounts to €20-25 million and goes to the Equal Burden Sharing Fund, which has a surplus of €80 million, but these funds are not being utilized due to the lack of regulations for their management.
