Foot and Mouth Disease Checks in the Buffer Zone – Portable Disinfection Equipment Procurement Considered

Following the confirmation of foot and mouth disease (FMD) cases in the occupied territories, the Veterinary Services of Cyprus are on high alert and conducting intensive preventive checks in the free areas, along the Buffer Zone. Sampling is taking place in high-risk areas, such as Athienou, Lympia, Potamia, and Xylotymbou, with initial results being negative. Concern is heightened by the discovery of the SAT1 serotype, a type of the virus that has not been previously detected in Cyprus. To prevent the spread of the virus, vehicle disinfection measures have been strengthened at crossing points, including the British Bases, with the installation of new disinfection mats. In addition, the Veterinary Services are considering the procurement of portable, automatic disinfection equipment for more targeted interventions. A special protocol is also in place for the transport of milk from the Pergamos area, with escorts from the Veterinary Services. The outbreak has triggered reactions from other countries, with Australia and Canada temporarily removing Cyprus from the list of FMD-free countries. The authorities of these countries are requesting confirmation from international organizations that Cyprus is free of the virus, in order to reconsider their decision. The Veterinary Services have contacted Saudi Arabia to ascertain whether trade restrictions will be imposed, and so far no such restrictions have been reported on halloumi imports. Checks and surveillance will continue until the end of the month, with the aim of safeguarding animal health and protecting the economy.
