Measures Announced by Fytiris and Vyras Following Shooting

Following recent shootings in Larnaca, the Minister of Justice and Public Order, Kostas Fytiris, met with the Mayor of Larnaca, Andreas Vyras, and the leadership of the local Police Directorate. The Minister emphasized the need for cooperation between the state, municipalities, and civil society to address the increase in organized crime. He announced the strengthening of police presence and the conduct of continuous patrols in critical areas, describing the effort as a "battle" requiring persistence and patience. Mayor Vyras expressed concern about the impact of criminal incidents on the city's progress and the sense of insecurity among citizens. He stated that the Municipality would assist through information and joint campaigns, but stressed that the suppression of organized crime is not the responsibility of Local Government. Mayor Vyras called for accountability from the entire state – Government, Police and Courts – and requested a specific action plan, expressing citizens' frustration with unfulfilled promises. The Police Director of Larnaca, Ioannis Kapnoulas, reported that police officers volunteered to work outside of their regular hours to support the police force. Investigations into the recent incident are ongoing, with an emphasis on increasing patrols to minimize the presence of police personnel within stations.
