Cypriot MEPs Raise Foot-and-Mouth Disease Management with EU Commission

Cypriot MEPs, including Michalis Hadjipantela, Lucas Fourlas, Giorgos Georgiou, and Geadis Geadi, have brought the issue of foot-and-mouth disease and its management to the attention of the European Commission. This follows a recent outbreak of the disease in Cyprus and the controversial practice of mass culling of animals. The MEPs requested clarification on the EU's contribution to resolving the problem, taking into account the specific characteristics of Cypriot livestock farming. Lucas Fourlas, head of the Cypriot delegation to the European People's Party, emphasized the need for technical and financial support from the EU, as well as ensuring the protection of producers' interests and the credibility of Cypriot products. He highlighted the serious economic consequences of foot-and-mouth disease for livestock farming. Mr. Fourlas proposed a three-pronged approach to tackling the disease: firstly, culling should be limited to animals showing clear symptoms; secondly, strengthening hygiene measures on farms; and thirdly, providing financial support to farmers affected by the disease and restrictive measures. This approach, according to Mr. Fourlas, aims to combine responsibility, scientific evidence, and respect for animals and farmers, avoiding extreme measures that could harm entire farming units and the economy of the sector.
