Cypriot MEPs Raise Foot-and-Mouth Disease Management with European Commission

Cypriot MEPs have raised the issue of foot-and-mouth disease management with the European Commission, seeking clarification on European contributions to solving the problem and highlighting the specific characteristics of Cypriot livestock farming. Michalis Hadjipantela, Lucas Fourlas, Giorgos Georgiou, and Geadis Geadi also requested an investigation into alternatives to mass animal culling and measures to protect exports and the cost of halloumi production. Lucas Fourlas stated that he has requested technical and financial support from the EU, as well as assurances that decisions protect producers and the credibility of Cypriot products. He emphasized that the management of foot-and-mouth disease must be done responsibly, with scientific evidence, and with respect for animals and livestock farmers. He proposed three pillars for tackling the disease: limiting culling to animals with clear symptoms, strengthening hygiene measures in livestock farms, and providing substantial financial support to affected livestock farmers. He believes that culling should be limited to visibly sick animals, with immediate isolation and veterinary monitoring. Overall, the MEPs are seeking sustainable solutions to address foot-and-mouth disease, taking into account the specific characteristics of Cypriot livestock farming and protecting the interests of producers.
