Police Duty to Investigate Domestic Violence: Legal Perspectives

Published January 26, 2026, 14:22

Susanna Pavlou, Director of the Mediterranean Institute of Gender Studies, and lawyer Simos Angelidis commented on the domestic violence case involving the Mayor of Paphos, Faidon Faidon. Ms. Pavlou emphasized that the police have a duty to investigate, but with the safety and dignity of the victim as a priority. Legislation does not require healthcare professionals to report such incidents, but protects them if they do. Mr. Angelidis stressed the need to investigate all allegations, both those concerning the Mayor and those concerning the complainant. The ex officio investigation began due to the evidence that emerged.
