Zelensky Expresses Hope for Meaningful Peace Talks, Raises Concerns Over Concessions

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed hope for serious and substantive peace talks mediated by the US to be held in Geneva next week. However, he also voiced concern that Ukraine is being asked to make concessions "too often", while Russia is not subject to the same pressure. Zelensky emphasized that there is sometimes a feeling that the two sides are discussing completely different things and referred to former US President Donald Trump's call for peace negotiations to begin, pointing out the need for concessions from Russia as well, such as a ceasefire, in order to be able to hold elections. Zelensky characterized Russian President Vladimir Putin as a "slave of war", arguing that he is unable to abandon the idea of conflict and that he deludes himself about his position. He stressed that Russia, using sophisticated Iranian Shahed drones, is making the war increasingly deadly over time. At the same time, the Ukrainian President expressed regret for the slow pace of political decisions needed to counter Russian attacks and underlined that the evolution of weapons is faster than the decisions that could stop the war. His reference to Iranian drones highlights the growing complexity of the conflict. In summary, Zelensky wants meaningful peace talks, but insists that any solution must include concessions from Russia. At the same time, he criticizes the delays in providing aid and the feeling that Ukraine is suffering a disproportionate amount of pressure to make concessions.
