Greek-Owned Tanker Hit by Unknown Object Off Novorossiysk Port

A Greek-owned tanker, the “Maran Homer,” was hit by an unknown object on Saturday morning while off the port of Novorossiysk. The vessel, sailing under the Greek flag, was expected to load Kazakh crude oil at the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) terminal. The hit occurred at 4:35 a.m. local time (01:35 GMT), while the ship was outside Russian territorial waters. The managing company, Maran Tankers, announced that there were no injuries to the crew and that material damage to the deck and equipment of the ship was minor. The company stated that the “Maran Homer” has already moved away from Novorossiysk and investigations are underway to determine the nature of the object that caused the hit. Authorities have not yet provided more information about the incident. The incident occurs during a period of increased geopolitical tension in the region, against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine and sanctions against Russia. Maran Tankers has informed the competent authorities and is cooperating with them for a full investigation of the incident.
