US Deficit Larger Than During the Great Depression, Raising Fiscal Concerns

The US federal budget deficit has reached levels higher than those of the Great Depression, despite economic growth and low unemployment. The Washington Post points out that the continued increase in the deficit undermines the functioning of the federal government and limits its ability to fund important areas such as defense and social welfare. A bipartisan group of lawmakers has proposed a resolution to set a target for reducing the deficit to 3% of GDP by 2030, as a step towards stabilizing the debt. Achieving this goal will require difficult decisions regarding mandatory spending, such as Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, as well as political consensus and sacrifices from all parties.
