Greece Imposes Price Controls on Fuel and Food to Combat Inflation

The government is imposing price caps on profit margins for fuel and food, in response to rising prices caused by geopolitical developments, particularly in the region of Iran. KEVΕ expresses concern about price increases, especially for food, which is impacting household budgets. Fuel prices have again reached €2 per liter, while food inflation in February was 5.4%, double the country's average inflation rate. The price cap measures, although unpopular in the market, are considered necessary to avoid further price increases. In addition, the government is preparing additional support measures, such as the return of the Fuel Pass and the Market Pass, in case the crisis continues. Subsidies for electricity bills will also be reviewed, funded by revenue from the carbon market. The government seeks to protect citizens from economic pressure, taking into account international developments and their impact on the Greek economy.
