Auditor General: Candidates Hid Election Expenses Behind Banquets – Who the Auditor Names as Exceeding the Limit

A report by the Audit Office reveals that mayoral and municipal council candidates resorted to methods of concealing election expenses, such as banquets in friendly homes, in order to exceed legal limits. Auditor General Andreas Papakonstantinou points out that the nature of certain expenses makes it difficult to control total election spending. The report names specific candidates who exceeded spending limits, including Yannis Armeftis, Loukas Polycarpou, Nikos Damianou, Kyriakos Xydias, Pantelis Georgiou, Evros Loizidis and Miltiadis Papadopoulos. Some of these were elected in the June 9, 2024 elections. The exceedance of the limits ranges from 17% to 105% for Yannis Armeftis, who recorded expenses of €61,494 against a limit of €30,000. The report also states that 66 of the 337 candidates did not submit supporting documents for the expenses they declared, while 106 submitted reports without complete documentation. The Audit Office highlights the need for stricter control of election expenses and compliance with the law, in order to ensure transparency and the credibility of the electoral process.
