‘Helen the Prostitute’: Eleni Sokratous’ Lawyer Denies €2 Million Claim

After 16 years, a significant chapter in the case known as “Helen the Prostitute” is coming to a close. The case revolves around the story of Eleni Sokratous, which was presented in a television series and a book without her consent, as proven by the Supreme Court. Her lawyer, Laris Vrachimis, stated that she had discussed her story with the author, Annita Nikolaou, but never gave her permission to publish the book, which he claims contains inaccuracies, such as the allegation of rape by her father. Mr. Vrachimis also clarified that the claim for compensation is between €20,000 and €25,000, denying rumors of a €2,000,000 demand. Initially, Ms. Sokratous’ lawsuit was dismissed by the District Court of Nicosia in 2016. However, on Tuesday (January 20th), the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Ms. Sokratous, finding that the lower court had examined the case on the wrong basis and that her privacy had been violated. This decision marks a significant turning point in the case. The case highlights issues related to the protection of privacy and the need for consent when publishing personal stories, even if they have already become public knowledge.
